Short answer
To get recommended by ChatGPT, make your business easy to find and easy to trust. Let OpenAI's crawler read your site, build clear service and city pages, claim Bing Places, keep your license and BBB profile current, grow reviews steadily and earn mentions on other sites. No one can guarantee placement, but these steps raise your odds.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT can only name you if it can find you, so allow OAI-SearchBot and get indexed in Bing.
- Your own website is the top source type ChatGPT used for local searches in a BrightLocal study.
- Reviews, BBB pages and licensing sites showed up as trust signals in a 2026 study of local trade answers.
- Mentions on other sites matter as much as your own pages.
- Skip shortcuts like llms.txt and focus on the basics that engines actually read.
Why should contractors care about ChatGPT recommendations?
Because a growing share of homeowners now ask AI before they call. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, published February 11, 2026 from a panel of 1,002 US adults, found that use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% the year before to 45%.
The same survey found 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses and 40% trust AI platforms for business recommendations. When a homeowner in Chula Vista asks ChatGPT for a plumber, the answer usually names a short list. Being on that list is the new version of being in the Map Pack.
Step 1: Can ChatGPT actually read your website?
Check this first, because nothing else matters if the answer is no. OpenAI's help center says that to be eligible for inclusion, a site should allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it and make sure the host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses.
Open your robots.txt file and confirm you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot. Ask your host or firewall provider whether bot protection blocks it. Because Microsoft announced Bing as ChatGPT's default search engine in 2023, also verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
Step 2: Does your website answer the questions customers ask?
Your site should say plainly what you do, where you do it and why you are qualified. In BrightLocal's study of 800 ChatGPT local searches in November 2024, business websites made up 58% of the sources ChatGPT used.
- One page per core service, such as roof repair, tile roof replacement or leak detection.
- City or area pages for the places you really serve, like Chula Vista, National City or Eastlake, with real local details.
- Your CSLB license number, years in business, insurance and warranty terms in plain text.
- Short answers to common questions near the top of each page, written in full sentences.
- Project photos with captions that name the job and the neighborhood.
Step 3: Are your listings complete and consistent?
Claim every major listing and make your name, address, phone and categories match everywhere. Directories made up 15% of ChatGPT local sources in the BrightLocal study, and OpenAI says it may share location with third party providers for local results.
Start with Bing Places, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Angi, Nextdoor and your trade associations. Use the same business name format on all of them. Fill in services, service areas, hours and photos.
Fix old listings too. If you moved from National City to Chula Vista or changed your phone number, an outdated directory page can confuse an AI that reads both versions. Search your business name and old phone number and correct every mismatch you find.
Step 4: Do your trust signals hold up?
ChatGPT often checks the same trust pages a careful homeowner would. In an 8ight.AI study published October 5, 2026, based on 1,412 ChatGPT answers about local trades, ChatGPT cited the BBB in 38.7% of answers and government or licensing sites in 25.1%.
The same study found ChatGPT named 3.4% of tested firms with under 25 Google reviews and 22.2% of firms with 1,000 or more. 8ight sells AI visibility services and tested through the API, so treat these as signals, not rules. Still, the lesson is clear. Keep your CSLB record current, claim your BBB profile, and ask for reviews after every job.
Step 5: Is the rest of the web talking about you?
Mentions on other trusted sites help AI decide you are a real, respected business. In BrightLocal's study, business mentions such as news stories, blogs and best of lists made up 27% of ChatGPT local sources.
In a May 2025 Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with visibility in Google AI Overviews at 0.664, while backlinks correlated at 0.218. That study measured Google, not ChatGPT, but it points the same way. Sponsor a Little League team, join the chamber of commerce, get listed by your suppliers and pitch a project story to local news.
Step 6: Is your content easy for AI to quote?
Write facts AI can lift into an answer, with sources. The 2024 GEO paper from Princeton researchers, presented at KDD 2024, found that methods like adding statistics and citations can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses. Those tests used a research engine, not the live ChatGPT, so treat the number as a direction.
Put the direct answer first on each page. Use real numbers from your business, such as how long a typical job takes, and name where any outside figure comes from. Update pages when prices of materials, codes or your services change.
What should you skip?
Skip tactics that promise a shortcut. An Ahrefs review of server logs from 137,000 domains found 97% of llms.txt files got zero AI requests in May 2026, as reported by PPC Land, and Google says llms.txt will not raise or lower your rankings.
Also skip fake reviews, bought mentions and pages stuffed with city names. The FTC prohibits fake reviews, and AI engines read the same web that people do. At WebSEO.pro in Chula Vista, our free audit checks each step above for your business and shows you which fixes come first.
