The AI Search Checklist for Contractors

By Alex Luna, founder of WebSEO.pro · Updated

Short answer

To show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, a contractor needs pages that answer real questions, accurate schema, a robots.txt that lets AI search crawlers in, Bing Webmaster Tools, consistent listings, steady reviews, genuine third party mentions, fresh content and simple tracking. Work through the list in order.

Key takeaways

  • Fix your own website first, because AI engines read it, quote it and link to it.
  • Each AI company uses its own crawler names, and blocking the search crawler can keep you out of its answers.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools now reports citations in Copilot, and IndexNow helps keep pages fresh.
  • In a 2025 Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated far more with AI visibility than backlinks.
  • llms.txt is optional, and 2026 data shows almost no AI bots request it.

How do I write website content that AI tools will quote?

Write each page so the first lines answer the question a homeowner would type or speak, then add detail. AI tools pull short, clear passages that stand on their own.

Use question headings such as how much does a roof inspection involve or how fast can you fix a slab leak. Answer in one or two plain sentences right under the heading. Then add steps, local details and what to expect. Name your trade, your city and your service area in natural sentences. Add facts that only you know, like the permits you pull in Chula Vista or the jobs you see most in San Diego summers. Skip vague slogans because nobody quotes them.

Which schema helps AI search for contractors?

LocalBusiness schema on your home or contact page and Service schema on each service page are the core. They state your name, address, phone, hours and services in a format machines read without guessing.

Make sure every value matches your Google Business Profile and your listings. Mismatched phone numbers or old addresses confuse engines that compare sources. Keep a visible FAQ on key pages. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, but the questions and answers on the page are still text that AI tools can read.

Should my robots.txt allow AI crawlers?

Allow the search crawlers if you want to appear in AI answers. Each company documents its own bot names, and each setting works on its own.

Check your robots.txt and your firewall or security plugin, since some block AI bots by default. Changes can take about a day to apply, per the OpenAI and Perplexity docs.

  • OpenAI: OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is the separate training crawler.
  • Perplexity: PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results, and Perplexity recommends allowing it.
  • Anthropic: ClaudeBot collects content for model training. Claude-SearchBot indexes for search, and Claude-User fetches pages when a user asks. Blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce your visibility in Claude.
  • Google: Google-Extended is a control token for Gemini training and grounding. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. Googlebot is what crawls for Search.

Why do Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow matter for AI search?

Bing feeds Microsoft Copilot, and Bing Webmaster Tools now shows how often Copilot cites you. In a February 10, 2026 post, Bing introduced an AI Performance report that shows citations in Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners, plus the grounding queries that pulled your pages in.

Verify your site, submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow, which lets you ping Bing when a page changes. Bing's own post says IndexNow helps keep information fresh across search and AI experiences. Many site platforms and plugins support it with one setting.

Which profiles, listings and reviews do AI engines use?

AI engines lean on trusted profiles, licensing sites and review platforms to check that you are real. Keep your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB and trade directories complete and consistent.

A 2026 study by 8ight.AI, summarized by PPC Land on October 6, 2026, looked at 1,412 ChatGPT answers and 218 Claude answers across 39 trades. ChatGPT cited the BBB in 38.7% of answers and government or licensing sites in 25.1%, but never cited Yelp. Claude cited Yelp in 92.7% of its answers. ChatGPT named 3.4% of tested businesses with under 25 Google reviews and 22.2% of those with 1,000 or more. The study was a short snapshot by a company that sells AI visibility services, so treat it as a signal, not a rule. It still points the same way: claim every listing, keep your CSLB record current, and ask every happy customer for a review.

How do third party mentions help contractors in AI answers?

Mentions of your business on other sites tell AI engines that real people know you. In a December 2025 Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions correlated about 0.737 with visibility across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, and branded web mentions correlated 0.664 with ChatGPT visibility. Correlation is not proof of cause, and the study covered larger brands.

For a local contractor, earn mentions the honest way. Pitch a useful story to local news, like how to prep a home for Santa Ana winds. Sponsor a Little League team. Post short how to videos on YouTube with your business name in the title and description. On Reddit, answer questions in local or trade communities as yourself, with real advice, and follow each community's rules. Never post fake reviews or pretend to be a customer.

How do freshness and tracking fit into AI search?

Keep key pages current and measure what AI engines do with them. Update service pages when your offers, service area or process change, and show a visible updated date.

Track AI traffic in your analytics by watching referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. Check Bing's AI Performance report monthly. Once a month, ask the main engines the questions your customers ask and note who gets named. Answers vary from run to run, so look for trends over months, not single results. If you want a starting point, a free audit from WebSEO.pro or our free AI Visibility Analyzer shows which of these items your business already covers and which ones to fix first.

Do contractors need an llms.txt file?

No. llms.txt is optional, and there is little evidence AI engines use it today.

PPC Land reported on July 2, 2026 that Ahrefs server log data from 137,000 domains found 97% of llms.txt files got zero requests in May 2026, and AI retrieval bots made up 1.1% of requests to those files. Google's guidance says llms.txt will not positively or negatively affect your visibility or rankings in Search. If your platform makes one in a click, it does no harm. Spend your time on the items above first.

AI search checklist, in order

  1. 1Rewrite each service page so the first two sentences answer the main question.
  2. 2Add question headings, local details and a visible FAQ to key pages.
  3. 3Add LocalBusiness schema and Service schema that match your Google Business Profile.
  4. 4Check robots.txt and your firewall for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot.
  5. 5Decide on training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) as a separate choice.
  6. 6Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow.
  7. 7Complete Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB and trade directories with the same details.
  8. 8Confirm your CSLB license record is current.
  9. 9Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to every review.
  10. 10Earn genuine mentions through local news, YouTube videos and helpful Reddit answers.
  11. 11Update key pages when facts change and show the updated date.
  12. 12Track AI referrals and Bing AI Performance every month.
